Introducing the IdeaJam API

Tags: 1.8 ideajam api

Coming in the Summer '10 release of IdeaJam (due in May/June) we will be introducing the IdeaJam API. The API will be available via JSON and Web Services. Using the API customers will be able to integrate IdeaJam into mobile applications, intranet applications, widgets, and other Lotus products including Websphere Portal, Lotus Connections and many others. You may remember this blog entry where we talked about our customers developing some really cool IQJam integration points with iPhone, Android and Microsoft Office.

Based on customer feedback let me introduce you to the IdeaJam API methods:

addComment(ideaId, comment, securityKey)

addIdea (idea, securityKey)

findIdeaById(ideaId, securityKey)

getIdeaSpaces(securityKey)

getRecentComments(ideaSpace, securityKey)

getRecentIdeas(ideaSpace, count, securityKey)

getRecentIdeasByAuthor(author, count, securityKey)

getRecentIdeasByTag(tag, ideaSpace, count, securityKey)

getStats(securityKey, numberOfIdeas, numberOfComments, numberOfVotes securitykey)

getTopInnovators(securityKey)

getTopTags(securityKey)

getVotesForIdea(ideaId, securityKey)

getWhatsHot(timeFrame, securityKey)

searchIdeas(search, securityKey)

The API is still under development and if you have any feedback I am sure the development team would love to hear from you.

Earlier this month and as part of the Open Government Initiative the USDA launched an IdeaJam to share and collect ideas from US citizens. This site was set up by Elguji Partner Sean Burgess with ANSD Designs based in Laurel, Maryland.

Here you can provide feedback about published data, records, reports & resources provided by us as well as our Open Gov Plan. Let us know how we can improve the quality, value & usefulness of USDA information. Learn more about what we’re doing, discuss ideas by posting comments, and help us improve our programs & operations. If you’d like to post, discuss and vote on your own ideas, head over to the Share Your Ideas section.

My administration is committed to creating and unprecedented level of openness in government. We will work together to ensure the public trust and establish a system of transparency, public participation, and collabortion. Openness will strengthen our democracy and promote efficiency and effectiveness in government.

Hutch Carpenter: Why Ideas Are Core to Enterprise 2.0

Tags: ideas ideajam enterprise 2.0

Hutch Carpenter the VP of Product for Spigit (a competitor of Elguji's) has a great blog entry about how important ideas are in the context of Enterprise 2.0:

If Enterprise 2.0 rests on delivering value through collaborative, emergent and social means, ideas are the top basis for leveraging these qualities.

...

There are many types of content and activities – social objects – that are part of a social computing initiative. I’d argue ideas, for a host of reasons, should be considered top amongst those social objects.

Our XPages 101 class in London was a success!

Tags: xpages training london

Yesterday, Ben Poole and Elguji's Matt White presented the XPages101 course which was designed over the last couple of months to be an introduction to developing with XPages. This class was delivered in cooperation with the London Developer Co-op

Overall the class seemed to go pretty well, the timings need some work, and sometimes we went a little fast at some points which may have left a few people overwhelmed at the fire hose of information we got through in a short period of time! That will not happen again now that I understand how it all hangs together a bit more.

The feedback from the attendees was really gratifying...

Question

Overall, how would you rate the course?

Answer

95% (between Excellent and Good)

Question

How was the course material?

Answer

86.67% (between Excellent and Good)

Question

How was the presentation style?

Answer

86.67% (between Excellent and Good)

Question

Would you recommend the course to your colleagues / nerdy friends?

Answer

Yes: 100%

Obviously there's always room for improvement and there were some great feedback comments as well...

"A real eye opener for me as I've not looked XPages prior to the course."

"Excellent value for money. Pitched just right for the first steps into XPages."

"It gave me a very good understanding of XPages under the bonnet."

"It was great being here, great course, the XPages start I was looking for."

One of the things which we had consciously not done was provide lots of handout materials. The aim was to reduce the costs of the course as much as possible. From the feedback it seems people would have been happy to pay extra to get more paper based materials. So I think in future iterations of the course we'll change that around.

The other area where a couple of people expressed an interest was for an "intermediate" course. This leaves us in a bit of a quandary, as we are not sure we know what intermediate is. So if you have any thoughts we'd love to hear them.

Overall though, as we said earlier, it was a great day. Good fun for us, and hopefully useful to everyone else.

If you are interesting having XPages application development training please let us know. We are flexible and can accomodate your specific training or application development needs.
