Idea:

We have users who have lots of mail rules, in fact more than 100. For this reason, they refuse to use Lotus Notes.

They are using Microsoft Outlook connector to connect to their Domino mailbox. This is a support headache for us, and we are limited in a lot of things we want to do in our environment because of this pocket of users.

Of all of the complaints and issues that they have with Notes, the one point that we can't argue with is the limit on the number of mail rules that Notes has, but Outlook does not.

Comment: yet another example writing applications bandaided by using end clients, rather than looking at the problem as a whole working out if there's a better way to do it.

how about getting the server to do more of the work? enterprise mail i.e. exchange and domino are great for allow people to talk, but let leave the spam filtering, av and complicated rules for specialised solutions i.e. mailsweeper, exim, qmail etc.

just cause client x has y features, doesn't necessary mean its the right way to approach the problem.

Comment: wow... 100 Mailrules is a lot. And I think 1.000 user with 300 mailrules (1000x300=300.000) will have a bad impact on the router system. So I think this is the reason for the limitation.

But a autom. system which can optimize rules would be nice. For example... the user created a rule to move mails from XY into folder ZZ. After some days he remove the folder but forgott the rule. A cleanup task should deactivate this rule (I will create a new ideajam for this).

Or another example... the user blocked eMails from XY via rule 1 and via rule2 for user UU and with rule3 he blocked user WW. The autom. cleanup system should merge all these rules into only one.

Oh, and I would like to crosslink this here when we discuss the rule system:

Comment: 100 is clearly an arbitrary limit, but it seems to me that if people need more than that, then perhaps they need more dynamic rules.

I assume the rules are to put mail in folders according to the sender?

if domain a then folder a
if domain b then folder b etc

whereas a rule of...

if (list of domains) then create/place in folder called 'domain name'

would be simpler.

Have you analysed the user's rules?

Idea:

I would like to have more options and control over event trigger notifications.

We use event trigger to notify us when a database becomes corrupt for example.

If something like a mail.box or log.nsf file becomes corrupt, we get several thousand email messages within just a few minutes in our admin inboxes.

I would like to have the ability to cutsomize the subject of the notifications.

I would also like the ability to limit the number of notifications for a specific trigger. In other words, be able to limit the notifications of a specific trigger to 50 messages instead of thousands.

I'm not sure how the mechanics of the second request would work and how the Domino server would know that a event trigger had been tended to so that it can send notifications the next time that a mail.box and log.nsf becomes corrupt again, but there should be some sort of way of limiting the endless mass of messages that are generated.

Comment: Larry, you couldn't be more correct.

In some of our cases, the notifications come because a mailbox is corrupt and the router cannot deliver the message to the mailbox. The notification only lets us know that a database is corrupt, but does not tell us which one.

We have to go to the log and scan through at the exact times that the notifications messages were sent to see which database(s) were corrupt.

Idea:

When you install Domino on a Windows platform machine, the Domino program directory is not added to the server's path statement.

It would make it alot easier to run nsd.exe, and nserver -c commands (for batch files) if the program directory was already in the path already.

Of course, it doesn't take much to go and add it manually after installing Domino, but please give me a reason why it should not be added to the path automatically during the install?

Comment: Basically you need notes.ini, not the program directory. And that one should not reside in the program directory for a server in the first place.

Idea:

I often times visit the files view in the administrator to look at which mail files on a server are using which template (we have several different templates in operation), which database have quotas and which don't, which databases are over quota, which are the largest databases, etc. etc.

It would be great to be able to export the column headings and the actual data to a .csv so that it could be opened with excel.

This is currently possible, but through these tedious steps:

go to the server console on the actual server with PCA/Remote Desktop
(not possible with the admin client itself)
sh dir -xml >filename.xml
File Transfer with PCA/Remote Desktop/FTP and move the filename.xml to your local machine.
Open filename.xml with Excel, select "As XML List" when it imports
Let Excel create the XML schema
Delete the columns and databases that you don't want and re-save as .xls file

Idea:

Often times, I will spend hours searching through the logs to see what time my program documents finished running.

We have the standard and typical Fixup and Compact program documents running.

It would be great if there was an extra field in the program document for the Domino server to send an email notification to a configurable address when the program shuts down.

This would give us a good idea on how efficient our database maintenance is performing and be able to adjust the program documents accordingly.

For custom applications, scripts, or jobs which are executed via program documents, I'm sure that the benefits would be even greater.

At the very least it would be good to generate an event when the program finishes. Of course, the admins would have to have events and stats setup.

How many times have you setup a user on a particular mail server. Their home server in their person document is correct, and then administration server setting in the database properties of their mail file is correct.

Next, thea move offices from Sao Paulo to Singapore. You create a new replica on the Singapore server so that it's ready to go when they get to their new office in Singapore on Monday morning.

A couple of weeks later, you delete the replica copy of the database on the Sao Paulo server.

Guess what, the administration server in the mail file is still set to the Sao Paulo server, so adminp won't modify the names in the ACL. And guess what else, you will probably forget to set it correctly, unless you have to look at the Advanced Tab of the ACL (unlikely or infrequent occurance).

Wouldn't it be great to be able to have a field in the person document to be able "CHECK" that was called something like Synch administration server with home server.

Additionally, it would be great to have a column for administration server in the files view of the Admin Client. This way it would be easy to see which databases might be obviously set wrong.

Comment: You do know there's the option in the admin client to move users to another server?

select the user and in the tools-person drop down, select 'Move to another server...'
The administration server will take care of creating a new replica on the new home server, pushing the change to the home server field in the location document of the client, set the new server as administration server etc.
