Domino Designer / : Changes to hidden fields on a document in edit mode should not put it in dirty state

Author: Slawek Rogulski
Tags: UI
Idea:

When you open a form to create a new document and the form sets some hidden fields up, say to provide values to drop downs, as far as the user is concerned they have not done anything. But if they cancel they will be prompted with save dialogue. It can be confusing. Similarly if I happen to change a field but undo the change the document should go back to an unmodified state.

So in order to prevent this, exclude back end changes from being tracked. Allow a manual setting of the "dirty" flag. Or provide a way to store various utility values in memory (as opposed to in temporary fields or environment variables) and make that memory accessible from script and formula anywhere on the form (maybe even in embedded elements). This memory access would be useful in other situations as well.

This could be a property on the form to only track changes in visible and editable vields. And you should still be able to mark the document as dirty if you think it makes sense at some point in the interaction.

Notes Client / Core/Frameworks (Incl. sidebar, rich text editor): Movable and resizeable layers / modal-less dialogs

Author: Slawek Rogulski
Tags: UI dialog
Idea:

Layers that can be moved by dragging and resized. Such layers would have a border and could be rolled up like the properties box by double clicking on the title bar.

Essentially these would be like modal-less dialog boxes and as such there could be more than one open(made visible) at a time.

If not layers cannot be extended with thiws additional functionality then can it be a new design element that will act like a modal-less dialog box with the ability to roll it up and have multiple open at a time.

Author: Slawek Rogulski
Comment: Ben,

It's a nice to have feature but it would help make the view more usable. I mean if you want to absolutely be able to get the gist of all the ideas from the view only then you need to make sure that the summary is adequate to the task.

...

The whole interaction could happen in the view really, with a bit more "Web 2.0" scripting. You want to see the discussion click on a button and a section below the idea will expand showing the discussion. You want to see who voted and how again click a button to expand a section below.

I am not saying this is the way to go but it is a possibility. All in the name of efficiency and maintaining context.
Author: Matt White
Comment: Slawek,

Actually in an early beta we did have functionality that allowed you to see the ideas and comments from the views and the general concensus was that usability suffered. I guess that's our fault for the implementation and I'm sure we'll re-visit in future versions but for the moment we want to get a good solid base in and working.

Matt
Domino Designer / : add a grid view design element

Author: Slawek Rogulski
Tags: ui xml multi-value
Idea:

I am thinking of your stock standard grid view control/widget. In Notes this design element could be used for displaying and editing multiple documents. So instead of embedding a catgegorized view showing only one of the categories this element could do the same but also allow easy editing of the documents, creating new documents and deleting existing documents; or should I say rows. I would also like this element to display and edit XML that could be stored in one of the fields on the document, or on another document, or retrieved from an ODBC data source. Now that DB2 is part of the picture I woud also like to be able to show data from DB2 in this element.

Naturally, I would like multiple such elements to be usable on one form.

The grid should have vertical and horizontal scrolling, sortable columns (in case of data coming from a category of a view field names could be used as default column names). It needs to be able to take up 100% (or less) of the hight and width of the container it's in, including table cells.

I may also want to join two or more data sets and then display in the grid. This functionality does not need to be part of the grid per se.

Author: Slawek Rogulski
Comment: Thanks.

Do you have a non-binding version of the release plan somewhere public so that we could get an indication of what is coming. We could then vote there for ideas on improving the IdeaJam. Now I do not want to take away from the IdeaJam itself. Would it then mean that we can organise ideas around the projects to which they belong? Perhaps. Although I think that the idea space could be extended. What would be needed is similar feature to a release management system although I would not want to build it into IdeaJam fully. Take it as me thinking out loud.

PS. I like the comment notification emails.
