By default every user sees the same design of the Domino directory, including all configuration data and the ugly person documents. There's simply too much information for the end user. He doesn't need to see everybody's home server, public key data or password policy. Some of potentially essential infos are hidden on tabs in a second row (like the company hierarchy).
I wish another design would be displayed to non-admins, just with the people, mail-in and groups views and user friendly forms for example like in the personal address book.

@1 is correct. But, one could setup a role-based view and form setup for a new role, "End-user mode" or some-such nomenclature. Would be a lot of work and testing, so probably not in the near-term, at the earliest.

@1: In names.nsf the user can update his own contact information with author access. I don't think he could do that in dircat.

@2 - A client that I know did this in his NAB (95000+ users). It's a little bit of a pain when you want to upgrade but it's working fine.

I see this idea not only from a user perspective. The configuration information should be out of sight for a user. It is also a security issue. Who is using extended ACLs for the NAB? Not many, I guess. We are using a user friendly directory in addition to the primary NAB but you cannot hide the primary NAB. It is always there.
