It may be because, @DocNumber is generated just before the html of of the view is pushed to the requesting client, that it is not available for any calculations based on it. I would like to have this formula available for calculations.

I would definitely go for a broader approach: Make all functions currently returning special text spit out regular text.

Due to the very nature of how view indexing is done, I wouldn't be too optimistic about it, though ...

I'd agree with Harkpabst, promoting on that basis.

You can use it in views, but it has to be buried inside a JavaScript function. Not very efficient.

There was a discussion about this on one of the blogs not so long ago, but I can't find it now. Basically for this to work any column formula that uses the value would have to be calculated at view time, which could be heavy. I'd be in favour of allowing it, but it could lead to novice developers killing the performance of their views.

We've been hearing for years how it would be too slow to do all kinds of things in the view renderer. I say let me shoot myself in the foot.

You have to remember that the Special Text fields are calculated on-the-fly as the UIview is being built. That is why they are not available when computing a document's entry in the view index.

If you were able to use them in the column formulas, then you would have to rebuild the view's index every time it was opened, which is not desirable.

Also, as the value of these special elements can differ from user to user (i.e. When Reader fields are used) do you maintain separate view indexes for everyone who has the view open ?
